Around the world, the search is on for the molecular mechanisms underlying diseases. Despite some notable successes, there are very few therapeutic options for a group of more than 40 neurodegenerative illnesses. Each is characterised by lysosomal dysfunction and the build up of undigested storage material, typically affecting children or young adults and proving fatal after a long period of disability.
